about title close up macro flower photography print

Roger Smith is a full time professional artist and photographer based on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, United Kingdom.

Roger studied Art, Design and Photography at Weymouth, Trowbridge and The University of Plymouth in Exeter. Specialising in Macro (close-up) Photography of Botanicals, Jurassic Coast (Fossils etc) & Abstracts enables him to explore new dimensions of nature seeing details often missed by the naked eye. By taking something so small that it is hardly visible and enlarging it to reveal the natural beauty and detail within, Roger creates truly stunning images that hover on the cusp between reality and abstraction.

In some cases, the subject is still recognisable but bridges the gap between the photograph as a visual representation and an abstracted artwork. Roger's first passion was geometrically and perspective based intricate Optical Art Painting. An extension of this and an ongoing theme is discovering ways to use the camera to create new compositions by exploiting the geometry of the Natural world. His new project explores pattern, repetition and geometric structures. The images are dynamic, colourful and in some cases psychedelic abstracts.

He has exhibited extensively across the South West, and just finished two exhibitions with the IATTDA (International Association of Three and Two Dimensional Artists) in Portugal. Roger's work has appeared in The Daily Telegraph, Interior Magazine, Digital Photographer, Evolver, The Wessex Muse Magazine, Dorset Life among other press.
